Our lovely resident, Jackie, has a wonderfully interesting story which includes travelling to exotic countries and singing real opera!
Her story begins in a roundabout way when, as the youngest of eight growing up in Mauritius, she learned to sing. Her parents, Joseph and Andree, encouraged Jackie’s hobby, which led her to meet her first singing teacher, the famous Mauritian tenor Max Moutia, while in her teens and she started training in earnest as a professional singer. Since then, Jackie has had an illustrious career, performing in a number of operas including Verdi’s Egyptian epic Aida, and his tragic La Traviata – which is also her favourite.
Jackie remained in Mauritius for the duration of her opera career before moving to the UK in the mid-1970s to settle down and have a family with husband Jim. The couple, who were married for 49 years, have three children, Brian, Anne, and Kevin and two grandchildren, George and Harry.
After moving to the UK, Jackie continued to sing – at weddings, church services and baptisms – and still sings in the home every day, much to the delight of residents, staff and visitors!
Although Jackie had time to travel around the world with Jim for his work as a civil engineer, it is her faith, family and singing which have been the cornerstones of her life, creating memories she will never forget.
