Research suggests that interaction with pets/animals has a huge benefit on our wellbeing, reducing stress and anxiety but also improving self-esteem, mobility and happiness.

So, we have recently introduced our residents to a very special robotic cat, which has been used in many care homes across the country. This cat moves, purrs, meows and washes itself just like a real cat, and reacts to stroking and movement from our residents. Resident Brian has become so attached, that his family have bought him a real cat for when he visits back home!

The cat is used within our one-to-one activities, and sometimes within a group with residents interacting with each other. As well as the many benefits that pets bring to our residents, this cat brings back fond memories for our residents who had pets when they were younger, sparking lovely conversation with staff and residents alike. It also gives our residents a sense of purpose, as they can have the sole responsibility for the cat, which is an incredible feeling for everyone.

It is a pure joy for our staff to watch the interaction between the residents and our very special cat. It’s a fantastic example of how technology can help reduce anxiety in a very calming and natural way.
