Before becoming the new clinical manager at Maples in January 2022, Debbie has had quite a journey. Her love for looking after others showed itself at an early age and, as soon as she finished school, Debbie started her nursing training. She qualified as both a State Enrolled Nurse and a Registered General Nurse, working for the NHS within the cardiology and kidney units of Shooters Hill, Fareham, and Lord Mayor hospitals.
After a few years as a hospital nurse Debbie was ready for a fresh challenge. So she joined Morden College in Blackheath, initially as a night nurse while caring for her young children. Morden College is a charity that has provides domiciliary, residential and nursing care to 200 older people. During her 28 years with the charity, Debbie progressed to deputy head of care and clinical lead before becoming registered manager of the domiciliary service.
During the pandemic, Debbie worked tirelessly to provide care to the Moredon College community and was successful in keeping Covid-19 at bay. Having realised at the end of 2019 that the pandemic would probably hit the UK, she prepared by buying in plenty of PPE. She also insisted on early testing, providing infection control training to staff and setting up vaccination clinics for both staff and residents.
Debbie is excited about her new role. She believes passionately in the role of education and is an experienced train the trainer with particular expertise in dementia and end-of-life care. Having travelled all over London’s hospitals to assess people at end of life, Debbie knows that there is real satisfaction in getting everything right for both the person at end of life and their family.
She says: “My aim is to provide our residents and their families with the help and support they need to live and die well in older life.”
Away from work, Debbie has three children with Tony, her husband of 35 years. Dennis, the eldest, works in IT while daughter Claire is a manager with St Mungo’s, the homeless charity and won awards for outstanding work during lockdown Her other son, Tom, also works in London as a crane driver, renovating and building in the Canary Wharf area.
Debbie’s only grandchild, Jessie, is five years old, but is growing up fast, and really enjoys playing with Debbie’s three dogs and her cat! Both Debbie and Jessie are very excited because the whole family will be travelling to Florida in September for a much-needed holiday.
