Residents of Maples have been admiring their lovely new roomies over the past couple of weeks. We are talking about, of course, the amazing lovebird and budgies which were very recently adopted into the Maples family.

It all started when Bobby the budgie who, after his owner sadly passed, was left behind. He was not alone and forgotten, though. His charm and charisma wooed many of our residents who loved to visit his cage for a cheeky chat. After seeing the positive impact that Bobby the budgie had made on the residents, Kay Prizeman, our head of activities, and our home manager Tony Onabanjo decided it would be lovely to introduce more birds to the residents and allow them to stay. So, after placing an advert to the community for any birds for donation, local bird sanctuary KP Birds kindly provided some lovely new feathered residents.

Residents were overjoyed to welcome their new avarian friends into the home: Romeo & Juliet the zebra finches, Peaches the lovebird, Reggie the rosella and Daphne the budgie!

Getting to know the birds, residents have been discovering their unique quirks and characteristics, like Peaches, who lives in the sunflower lounge and loves to sing, wowing residents with her lovely song. Daphne the budgie has moved in with Bobby and they complement each other nicely, for example, Daphne is shy while Bobby is a real show off!

Residents Mary and Colline on Poppy floor have been tasked with looking after the budgies, and they welcome the new challenge! They had this to say: “We enjoy having the birds in the lounge, they are good company, entertaining us and we enjoy helping to fed and clean them with the activities team. Something to take care of and look forward to seeing them every day.”

Everyone is thrilled with the new arrangement; the birds are settling in really nicely in the home and make a wonderful addition to the Maples family.
