Oomph! has released its 2019 Impact Report giving details of how its work impacts on both residents and care home staff who receive regular training and support.

Oomph’s Jack is a familiar figure here at Maples. Over the last year he has trained staff to run a wider variety of activities more effectively, and he also monitors progress. With his help we have made big improvements with:

  • Setting up a mobile sensory unit so
all residents, including those nursed in bed, can benefit. Its facilities
include diffuser oils (especially lavender for relaxation), mini lava lamps, window
multifoils that create a rainbow effect, musical instruments, therapy balls
with different textures, fiddle toys and even a selection of evocative sounds
    and smells.
  • Setting up residents’ own playlists
containing three songs that really mean something to them. So if a resident is
feeling upset, staff select the relevant track for them to listen to.
  • Training us to run exercise classes
with pompoms and scarves. It’s great fun for everyone!

Residents also
get out and about three times a month, thanks to the Oomph minibus. We go
bowling, to garden centres, vintage tea rooms and the pub, for example –
wherever residents want to go. We are all very proud of the progress that we
have made so far and look forward to another year of offering stimulating and
therapeutic activities to our residents.
